Posing one or more persons for a photograph is something
like arranging flowers in a vase. How they are oriented
to one another and to the vase alone or collectively
sends a message to the viewer. There are three types of
poses for pictures and each presents a different
message. When all three are included in your wedding
photography, your wedding album will appear more
creative.

Traditional Posing
Traditional posing are pictures of an individual or
group of people together. These are probably the least
time consuming and easiest to shoot for the professional
photographer and amateur alike. If you look back into
your parents’ wedding albums, you will probably find
many, if not all, of their poses were traditional. This
type of posing requires you to stand or sit up straight
and “say cheese!” These are the pictures of you alone,
you and the groom, your parents, and special guests.
While these pictures are important to any wedding album,
traditional poses alone are unable to tell in depth the
full story of what took place that day. To capture this,
other types of posing are needed.

Illustrative
This type of posing includes background information
along with the main subjects. The church where you were
just married, the horse and buggy that you are about to
ride in, or a beautiful flower garden at the place of
your reception fall into this category. I was married in
a park off the Mississippi River and we made sure to
have a picture of us next to a steamboat that had pulled
up to dock, as well as us standing with the river
flowing behind us. In addition to the beautiful bride
and handsome groom, illustrative poses provide
interesting information for the viewer to contemplate
because they tell a little more about the environment
that surrounded you during the wedding.

Fashion
This type of posing produces pictures that catch your
eye and hold attention because they are stylish and
unconventional. Bold and unusual fashion-magazine poses
draw your attention into the picture because of this.
One bride went as far as to dress her pony in a hat full
of flowers and stand nose to nose with him in her
wedding dress for some pictures on her wedding day. We
have pictures of us on our wedding day with a flock of
geese and ducks that had come by the river to be fed. It
was purely by accident, but it gave the picture that
untraditional look. Fashion poses in your wedding album
give a jazzy tone to your overall story.
